Medication Packaging & Types

1. How are the medications packaged?
Each dose of medication is sealed in a medication strip package with a detailed label that includes your child's name, date of birth, medications enclosed, date and time to be administered, and any special instructions. The camp staff simply tears open the perforated packet and hands your child his medications. Please note that only medications in pill form can be included in the dose strip. Other medications, such as inhalers, creams, and liquids, are dispensed and labeled separately and shipped to camp with your child’s other medications
2. Can you package over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as vitamins, Benadryl or Claritin?
Yes. When you register you provide us with detailed information regarding over the counter medications, including dose and time of administration. Our pharmacy will package these with any prescription medications dosed at the same time of day.
3. Can you package half a pill?
Yes, if your child’s prescription is written that way.
4. Can you package medications my child only uses on an “as needed” basis?
Yes. We package “as needed” medications separately and send them labeled with directions for administration. Please note that most camps stock a supply of as-needed medications. As a result, if you simply want your child to have access to basic medications in the rare case of a headache or stomachache, it is likely that you can avoid using our service altogether. Be sure to check with your camp.
5. What about injectables?
We can provide injectables, such as growth hormone and insulin. All pharmaceutical products that must be kept cold until opened, like insulin, will be shipped Next Day Air in cold packs and insulated envelopes. Extra shipping charges may apply.
6. Will your pharmacy dispense name brands or generics?
Unless the physician specifies “Do Not Substitute” or “Brand Only” our pharmacy will dispense the generic. Many insurance plans will only pay for a generic. If you do not want a generic, we ask that you notify your physician in advance. For OTC medications, our pharmacy will provide generics unless you specify otherwise.

Prescriptions and Refills

7. What if my child is at camp for longer than a month?
The physician can write most prescriptions with refills. For controlled substances, however, an additional 30-day prescription will be required. We have created a downloadable letter that explains the process to physicians (please follow the link from the Medication Order page). Please make sure that all prescriptions for your child’s stay are sent to us at the same time in order to avoid confusion.
8. What happens to extra medications if my child is at camp for less than 30 days?
We always package a month’s worth of medication, unless the prescription is written for less than a 30 day supply. Any unused medications will be returned to you on the last day of camp. You may use the extra medication at home, on vacation, or even at another camp.
9. What if my child is going to camp for eight weeks? Do you send all the medications at once?
It depends on your insurance plan. If your insurer will allow a vacation override for an extra month supply of medications, all medications will be sent at one time. If not, we will arrange to have the medications refilled and shipped to camp at the appropriate time.
10. How can I get a prescription for more medication if my child’s old prescription has not run out yet?
Almost every insurer has a provision called a vacation override for just this situation. A vacation override allows our pharmacy to input a vacation override code which allows your child’s medication to be filled before the old prescription has run out. Simply ask your child’s doctor to write a new prescription to cover the camp session and we will work with your insurer to get the vacation override code.
11. My child’s refill date is part way through camp. How do you handle that?
Almost every insurer has a provision called a vacation override for just this situation. A vacation override allows our pharmacy to input a vacation override code which allows your child’s medication to be filled before the old prescription has run out. If you insurance company does not allow a vacation override, the medication will arrive before camp begins and your insurance will not be billed until the refill date. Our billing may be delayed if you refilled shortly before camp. Please be aware that copay charges to your credit card may not appear until after your child returns from camp.
12. I need to fill a prescription for my child before camp begins. What do I do?
Go ahead and have the prescription filled. Almost every insurer has a provision called a vacation override for just this situation. A vacation override allows our pharmacy to input a vacation override code which allows your child’s medication to be filled before the old prescription has run out. . We have created a downloadable letter that explains the process to physicians (please follow the link from the Medication Order page). Our pharmacy will keep the prescriptions on file and refill them as needed.

Payment is not due until your order is complete. After we have received your child’s prescriptions and your insurance information we will determine your pharmacy charge (typically representing any applicable insurance co-pays and the cost of over-the-counter medications) and add that to your CampRx fee. Your credit card will be charged once your order is complete and an invoice will be emailed or mailed to you with a breakdown of charges.

You will see a charge from GabeCare DirectRx for your CampRx fee, plus over the counter/prescription medication co-pays and costs from our pharmacy provider, DirectRx.

If you choose to still use CampRx we can provide you an itemized receipt which you can then submit to your insurer for reimbursement. You can also choose to pay cash for your child’s medications.

How to use CampRx

1. Does our camp have to require parents to use CampRx?
No. You can choose to make it optional. If you’re uncertain about requiring CampRx at your camp, we suggest a pilot program for one session or for a limited number of campers. Once you and your camp’s families have experienced CampRx, we’re confident you’ll choose to make it mandatory.
2. How do we sign up with CampRx?
You may sign up on our website by visiting the camp section or by phone.
3. How do we notify parents that we are using CampRx?
While that is ultimately your decision, we have some strong suggestions based on our years of experience. We have found that how CampRx is presented to parents makes a tremendous difference. We have a full-color brochure that introduces our service to parents and we have sample letters to parents explaining CampRx. We suggest sending the brochure and your own cover letter to families that have registered campers and placing a link to camprx.com on your web site.
4. How do parents order?
Parents can order by filling out the Medication Order Packet for campers and mailing it to CampRx or begin the registration process online. If parents have any questions, they can call us toll free at 1-877-302-3881.
5. How do we handle trips away from camp?
Our packaging is portable; tear proof, and waterproof, making it ideal for overnights away from camp. Your staff can simply tear off the number of doses needed for each camper and tuck them in a backpack. They can retain the empty dose packets as a record that medications were administered.
6. Does CampRx supply MAR forms to help with recordkeeping of medications administered?
Yes. We can supply Medication Administration Record (MAR) for all campers utilizing CampRx. A MAR form can serve as documentation that a medication was administered to a child at the appropriate time of day. Just let us know when you register that you will be requiring this documentation.
