Parent Frequently Asked Questions

  1. My camp doesn’t offer CampRx. Can I still use your service?
Yes. Simply place your order (either online or by phone) and let us know that your camp does not participate. Be sure to let us know whether you would like us to ship your child’s medications to camp or to your home before camp starts if you prefer.

  2. How do I order?
You can order online or by phone, fax, or mail. If you prefer to order by fax or mail you can copy the Order Page (follow the link from the Parents Home Page). If you have any questions, please call us toll free at 1-877-302-3881.

  3. How much does your service cost?
Between $10 and $40, depending on your camp and your child’s medications. If your child takes only over-the-counter medications, our fee is always $10 for the summer. If your child takes any prescription medications our fees are as follows:

$15 for sessions of up to one week at camps that require CampRx
$30 for sessions longer than one week at camps that require CampRx
$20 for sessions of up to one week at camps that do not require CampRx
$40 for sessions longer than one week at camps that do not require CampRx

These charges are in addition to any cost for your child’s medications.

  1. How can I pay for CampRx?
Payment is not due until your order is complete. After we have received your child’s prescriptions and your insurance information (see below) we will determine your pharmacy charge (typically representing any applicable insurance co-pays and the cost of over-the-counter medications) and add that to your CampRx fee. We will then email or call you with your total and you will have the option of making a secure credit card payment or mailing us a check.

We can accept personal checks payable to CampRx, but it may delay shipment of your child’s medications. If you would like to pay by check please call us toll free at 1-877-302-3881 to work out the details.

  2. How will the charges appear on my credit card statement?
You will see a charge from PediatricRx LLC for your CampRx fee, We will then send an e-invoice so you can approve any additional charges from our pharmacy provider (DirectRx) for any unreimbursed medication costs.

  3. How are the medications packaged?
Each dose of medication is sealed in a medication strip package with a detailed label that includes your child's name, date of birth, medications enclosed, date and time to be administered, and any special instructions. The camp staff simply tears open the perforated packet and hands your child his medications. Please note that only medications in pill form can be included in the dose strip. Other medications, such as inhalers, creams, and liquids, are dispensed and labeled separately and shipped to camp with your child’s other medications.

  4. Can you package over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as vitamins, Benadryl or Claritin?
Yes. When you register you provide us with detailed information regarding over the counter medications, including dose and time of administration. Our pharmacy will package these with any prescription medications dosed at the same time of day. Our pharmacy obtains outstanding volume discounts on OTC medications, so you may enjoy significant savings on these items.

We now offer children’s vitamins and supplements from Nordic Naturals, rated as the country’s top source for such products. You can find out more by following the link on the Parents home page.

  5. Can you package half a pill?
Yes, if your child’s prescription is written that way.

  6. Can you package medications my child only uses on an “as needed” basis?
Yes. We package “as needed” medications separately and send them labeled with directions for administration. Please note that most camps stock a supply of as-needed medications. As a result, if you simply want your child to have access to basic medications in the rare case of a headache or stomachache, it is likely that you can avoid using our service altogether. Be sure to check with your camp.

  7. Can you package inhalers, prescription creams, drops, and liquid medicines?
Yes. They are included in separate, resealable packages marked for special dosing.

  8. What about injectables?
We handle some injectables, such as growth hormone, but we cannot supply insulin and many other injectable medications. Please call us if your child has a need for injectable medications.

  9. Can you supply vitamins and supplements?
Yes. We have always supplied vitamins and supplements, but we now proudly offer products from Nordic Naturals, rated as the country’s top source for vitamins and supplements. You can find out more about Nordic Naturals by following the link on the Parents home page. If you still prefer products from another company, we can almost always provide those as well. For more information about vitamins and supplements, please follow the link from the Parents home page to the FAQ section on the Vitamins & Supplements page.

  10. Will your pharmacy dispense name brands or generics?
Unless the physician specifies “Do Not Substitute” or “Brand Only” our pharmacy will dispense the generic. Many insurance plans will only pay for a generic. If you do not want a generic, we ask that you notify your physician in advance. For OTC medications, our pharmacy will provide generics unless you specify otherwise. In the latter case our pharmacy will attempt to provide the brand of medication you request but may have to substitute a generic if the name brand is not available.
Please note that we now offer vitamins and supplements from Nordic Naturals, rated as the country’s top source for such products. You can find out more by following the link on the Parents home page.

  11. What if my child is at camp for longer than a month?
The physician can write most prescriptions with refills. For controlled substances, however, an additional 30-day prescription will be required. We have created a downloadable letter that explains the process to physicians (please follow the link from the Medication Order page). Please make sure that all prescriptions for your child’s stay are sent to us at the same time in order to avoid confusion.

  12. What happens to extra medications if my child is at camp for less than 30 days?
We always package a month’s worth of medication. Any unused medications will be returned to you on the last day of camp. You may use the extra medication at home, on vacation, or even at another camp.

  13. What if my child is going to camp for eight weeks? Do you send all the medications at once?
No. Insurance rules require that we obtain and ship only one month’s supply of medication at a time. If your child will need more than one month’s supply of medication, your doctor must write the prescription with refills. We have created a downloadable letter that explains the process to physicians (please follow the link from the Medication Order page). We will arrange to have the medications refilled and shipped to camp at the appropriate time.

  14. How can I get a prescription for more medication if my child’s old prescription has not run out yet?
Almost every insurer has a provision for what is called a summer override or vacation override for just this situation. Simply ask your child’s doctor to write a new prescription to cover the camp session and we will deal with your insurer regarding coverage.

  1. My child’s refill date is part way through camp. How do you handle that?
If your refill date falls during camp, the medication will arrive before camp begins and your insurance will not be billed until the refill date. Subsequent refills will be sent as needed and the billing delayed as needed. PLEASE NOTE: Since we do not bill your insurance until your child is at camp, you may refill your child’s medications any time before camp if necessary. Our billing may be delayed if you refilled shortly before camp. Please be aware that copay charges to your credit card may not appear until after your child returns from camp.

  2. I need to fill a prescription for my child before camp begins. What do I do?
Go ahead and have the prescription filled, but be sure to request only the amount of medication your child will need before camp begins. Our pharmacy will not bill you insurance company until camp begins to avoid a conflict with your insurance company’s billing cycle.

  3. We have a ninety-day prescription plan. Can I still use CampRx?
Most likely. Because our pharmacy can only dispense a 30-day supply of medication at a time, however, you must do the following: count the number of days your child will need medication at home before camp begins and request that number of days to be filled for home use; then contact your insurance company to notify them that you need medication dispensed by our pharmacy and request a summer/vacation override.

  4. What about refills of medications for ADD? How can you get refills if they aren’t permitted on the prescription?
You will provide us with up to three original prescriptions for any controlled medications (depending on how long your child will be at camp). We have created a downloadable letter that explains the process to physicians (please follow the link from the Medication Order page). Our pharmacy will keep the prescriptions on file and refill them as needed.

  5. What if there are medication questions or problems while my child is at camp?
We maintain a 24-hour toll-free hotline for parents and camps. We also have a Board-certified pediatrician on call around the clock.

  6. How much lead time do you need to ship the medications?
We require ten days from the date we receive your child’s medication information until the start of his or her camp session. In an emergency, we can ship much faster, but there may be additional late and/or shipping charges involved depending on the circumstances. Please note that your child’s medications may not arrive at camp on time if you do not meet our deadline.

  7. How do I know the date by which I have to provide you with prescription and insurance information?
That date depends on when your child’s camp has asked us to ship the medications. When you place your order we will send you an email acknowledgment reminding you of the documents we need and stating the date when we need them.

  8. What happens if I order late?
That depends on many things. If you order late and still provide us with the necessary prescription and insurance information with enough time to make the scheduled shipment, we will typically waive the late fee. If your child’s medications must be sent in a later shipment, however, we will charge you a $25 late fee and some or all of the late shipping costs (depending on whether we are able to include your child’s medications in another shipment).

  9. How will my child get his medications if they cannot arrive by the first day of camp?
We will notify you as soon as we know your order cannot arrive by the first day of camp. In that case, we will advise you to send your child to camp with enough medication to last until our shipment arrives. We will also notify the camp health staff of the situation.

  10. How will my doctor know how to write the prescriptions?
You can download a letter via the Medication Order Page that provides complete instructions to your child’s doctor.

  11. Do you need the original prescription?
Only for Schedule II medications. For other prescription medications your child’s physician can fax or email the prescription directly to our pharmacy. Please see the previous questions and answer regarding a letter you can download for your child’s doctor.

  12. What if my child’s doctor writes a prescription for a new medication after your deadline for registering has passed?
We will work with you to handle late medication changes. You may be required to send additional medications to camp as a back up and additional shipping charges may be applied.

  13. Do you participate with my insurance?
Almost certainly. Our pharmacy has contracted with all major and most minor prescription carriers to meet your needs. If your insurer will not provide reimbursement for medications ordered through CampRx we will notify your child’s camp and advise them to allow you to opt out of our program. If you choose to still use CampRx we can provide you an itemized receipt which you can then submit to your insurer for reimbursement. You can also choose to pay cash for your child’s medications.

  14. How is my insurance billed? How am I billed for copays?
Our pharmacy bills your insurance company directly as prescriptions are filled. Co-pays, deductibles, and the cost of over-the-counter medications and uncovered medications are charged to your credit card.

  15. Is your pharmacy reliable?
Completely. Our pharmacy is DirectRx of Troy, Michigan, one of the largest direct-mail pharmacies in the country. It is a major provider of medications to all types of health care facilities. Our pharmacy is also located only a few miles from our office, facilitating communication and making it easy to address any questions or problems that may arise during the summer.

  16. My state has very specific requirements for medications at camp. Can you still supply my child’s medications?
Yes. Our pharmacy is well aware of individual state requirements. We also work with camps to make sure that everything we do complies with relevant state and federal laws.

  17. Will you notify me when my child’s medications are prepared and shipped?
Yes. We understand the importance of keeping you informed at all stages of the process. In addition to our email acknowledgment of your order, we will email you when we ship your child’s medications to camp.

  18. Can you continue to provide me with prepackaged medications for my child after camp is over?
Yes! We offer a year-round service that ships medications directly to your home or to your child away at school. The cost is $20 per month. If you’re interested, please call or email us and we’ll make the arrangements.

  19. How do I contact CampRx if I have further questions?
You can email us at oshea@camprx.com or you can call our toll-free number at 1-877-302-3881.
